FOREIGN BODY

Angelo and Kasia met in Italy in the Focolari prayer group where they were united in their love for and faith in God. Their relationship is broken up by the girl’s return to Poland and her decision to join a convent. Angelo travels to Warsaw to try and convince Kasia to change her mind. While waiting for her decision he starts a job in a multinational corporation. The company is managed by the ruthless and cynical Kris with the help of her assistant, Mira. In corporate reality, the deeply religious Angelo falls victim to ridicule and mobbing. Kris, using her authority treats him like a plaything and attempts to force him to break his moral principles but is simultaneously fascinated by his faith.

Krzysztof Zanussi returns to the essence of his brand of cinema, poses questions regarding the most important of things and provokes discourse. He touches on the present day place for God in the public space. He astutely observes the division of Poland into catholic and secular, squaring his hero against two extremely different world views. He collides the two value systems personified by the two female characters Kasia and Kris.
