CONSTITUTION OF MAY 3RD, 1791

One of Matejko's best-known paintings, completed in 1891 to commemorate the centennial of the adoption of the Constitution od 3 May. Matejko's painting is more than just a work of art: it is, above all, a history lesson showcasing the people depicted in the painting in order to tell the story of that momentous historic event. Before the moving image morphs into the scene painted by Matejko, we can witness the excitement as the deputies approach St. John's Collegiate Church, discussions about the Constitution and the concerns and objections of the nobility with regard to the proposed reforms.

The performance of the stage adaptation of Jan Matejko’s painting took place on May 3rd, 2016 in front of St. John’s Arch Cathedral in Warsaw.

More than 100 actors who portrayed historical figures from the epoch took part in the performance.

The performance was possible thanks to the generous support of the Sponsor of the performance Bank Zachodni WBK and performance Patron Totalizator Sportowy.

The project is co-financed by “ORLEN – DAR SERCA Foundation”. Performance partner is the Polish Army Museum.
