PASSED AWAY

Summary:

Writing about life in a Polish village in the convention of what she calls “pseudorealism,” Malina Prześluga tackles two falsehoods current in thinking about the countryside today. The first involves seeing it as a nexus of evil, poverty, depravity, degeneration, and cheesiness. The second perpetuates the image of an idyllic retreat to which the big-city middle class dream of moving to enjoy its peace, quiet, and clean air. In order to debunk both myths, Prześluga decided to write a text that would be pure untruth in the guise of truth. The outlandish plot and form are meant to demonstrate just how one-dimensional and disrespectful the image of the countryside in contemporary theatre and film really is. The authr seems to be saying that such places exist only in the fantasies of filmmakers and playwrights.
