The hero of this grotesque tale is a writer who in the name of artistic freedom declines participation in the “arrangements” surrounding him and is declared a “madman” by people close to him as well as those more distant. He takes on this role without complaint, decides to become a dog and is remanded to psychiatric treatment. While isolated at the hospital, he turns into an incomprehensible case, for the doctors, of someone who becomes ill of his own volition. The role of the “madman” thrust upon and accepted by the writer causes his work to achieve unexpected success. It is a case of being misunderstood, of alienation and of an artist’s sense of loneliness.
