FALOWIEC

Summary:

The Falowiec is a residential block of flats in Gdańsk, one of the longest in the world. Intended to showcase the modern architecture of People's Poland, it has since become a nightmarish memento of that period.

The play's protagonist is the architect who designed the Falowiec (a character not based on a real person). Left by his wife, who has moved to West Germany with their two daughters, he is spending his summer holiday alone in his flat in the oldest part of the building. One day, having nothing better to do, he goes for a walk along the twisting paths of this residential warren. He is amazed to discover that time in the Falowiec can stop and speed up at random, because "by curving space, [he has] managed to curve time as well." The architect travels to the future and listens to his neighbours complain about the building he designed. Along the way he witnesses the most important events of the forty years that have passed between 1975—the year it is in his flat—and the present day. The play was awarded a special mention at the ZAiKS Authors' Association and WFDiF playwriting competition for TEATROTEKA, 2016.
