THE BURNING OF JOANNA

Summary:

The play, awarded a special mention at the ZAiKS Authors' Association and WFDiF playwriting competition, is about the injustices and fraud associated with the reprivatisation of buildings and plots of land in Warsaw. Written before the story became front-page news, it depicts the brutal methods resorted to by racketeers and the suffering of evicted tenants. Yet it renounces realism in favour of Romantic drama, and examines the fraught issue of “wildcat” reprivatisation by using the form of a literary parable with hints of the grotesque. Recurring references to “undoing history”and “redressing wrongs” give the text a universal aspect that goes beyond the issue of reprivatisation.
